I've just purchased a standard stucco-wood frame home in AZ. I'm learning about green-tech and been reading a lot about SIP's. My question is, if a home has a good foundation and enough room around the home, why couldn't a new SIP frame be built to "wrap" around an existing stucco-wood frame home. Aside from additional insulation, the home builder could slowly breakdown the stucco-wood frame to even increase the internal sq footage slightly. I would also expect the roof would need to be "extended" to meet the new SIP frame. IS this concept possible and if not why?

Dear Jonjon,

Bad way of spending your money, unless you have a wonderful view, it is not worth it

Buy a new lot, and build a new home or take the stycco of your wall and insulated again with expanded styrofoam, or more expensive extruded styrofoam or spray urethane.

Cheapest way, but you will get the result, and for the money....go on vacation with your girlfriend

Naturally, if tou buid again...stay with SIP's,,,good choice for your money

Jonjon,

Most SIP manufacturers make what they call a nail base panel. It has OSB on just one side, so you can wrap your house with these panels, with the OSB to the outside, and make your home considerably more insulated and air tight. I would suggest a 3-1/2" nail base panel, and you would have to do a little work framing around the doors and windows.
