Okay, you've convinced me that a SIPs roof is a good way to go.  It is clear that SIPs make a lot of sense in a cathedral ceiling.

However, how are SIPs detailed when the ceiling isn't going to be a cathedral ceiling?  I.E.  The roof has the insulation and you have to add a ceiling for the bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.  Or do you use the SIPs installed flat for the ceilings and use trusses to build a roof over that?

If you have drawings or pictures of the details, it would be beneficial to see them.

I'd just go to my local truss company to get trusses for a conventional roof, or check the code for sizing for a stick built roof.  Where do I go to get the design details for a SIPs roof?  Is my only option a local engineer?  Doesn't that get expensive?

Thanks,

Bruce

This a is Metal SIPs/Wood Frame detail, but the concept is the same for Wood SIPs. Basically you are suspending a conventionally framed ceiling below your SIP roof, which is still advantagious because it gives you a flexible space to run your mechanical ductwork.

Simon and  Chris,

The drawings and pictures cleared that detail up nicely.

Does the SIPs panel manufacture or distributor provide details for the roof?  If not, where would I get the details?

Thank you,

Bruce

If you could recommend any suppliers supporting the central Indiana area, I'd appreciate the referrals.

Thank you,
Bruce

So, I'll start this off, Bruce. Try 888-633-6033. This is an ACH Foam Technology plant that is located in Washington, Iowa. They have several facilities around the US that manufacture R-Control SIPS and other EPS building products. While they do not manufacture SIPs at every location, they do provide support services, or distributor, and/or contractor referrals. You will find a complete description of
R-Control SIPs, with access to most connection details, and a number of construction videos at www.achfoam.com

Good luck with your research!
