I was at the parade of homes around Madison WI in the last couple of years and saw a product demonstration of I believe was a closed cell foam to insulate the area directly under the roofing deck for the roof insualtion.  That was it.  The attic would then be at or slightly above living space temp.  Any thoughts  or already applied and tried use of this insulation method?

I have used and highly recommend using foam insulation applied to the underside of the roof decking. The attic space becomes 'conditioned'
which is a very good thing if you have any ductwork in the attic space. There are others on this board who, not doubt, will provide their particulars and opinions on this subject. I will only say that the two most energy efficient houses I have built both used this system .

Thank you, Wes.  I was also thinking about a standing seal metal roof to help reflect heat.  I have some time left before my final construction plans are made so any input is helpful.

I've heard that it works quite well. A couple drawbacks do come to mind. The roof area is generally larger than the ceiling area because of the roof slope. Therefore, you will need to insulate a larger area (more $s) and at a specific R value you will lose more heat because the area is larger.

The other drawback is that should you ever need to replace any roof sheathing you will lose or damage the foam.
