I live in Florida and I am planning to install PEX tubing under my existing metal roof on the south side of my house and directly connect it to a Solar Hot Water Heater. Does anyone have any information on a do-it-yourself system like this. It seems to me it would work great and of course look great because one would not see it. It would also be low on maintainance. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Jeff,
At a trade show in Orlando I saw a solar system consisting of pex lines under a roof.  I can not remember the brand name but a company is selling this concept.  Here is a web site that might be helpful to you:  http://zomeworks.com/files/double-play/TimMerrigan/RISA_8Nov02.pdf

Thank you jmagill and Alton. If anyone is interested the roof deck under my metal roofing is white enameled 6" thick 26ga. steel w/ 1lb. EPS core SIPs. It seems to me that the solar absorbtion will be much greater than an ordinary wood roof deck especially with the 6" of foam concentrating the solar radiation. I wonder what the gain would be over the assemblies shown in the information you guys gave me? Intriguing. I gota try it!

Jeff, are there furring strips or an airspace between your metal roof and the SIP panel below it?

Jelly,

Yes. My "5-V Crimp" metal roofing is installed over 7/8" galvanized steel "hat" channels laid on 12" centers. All I would have to do is unscrew the roofing panels and install the PEX in the gaps between the furring channels.

Jeff,
Check the high temperature limits of PEX and test your roof temperatures. Use glycol and heat exchanger for freeze protection. Your SIP roof keeps the roof cold at night and remember that night sky radiation can super cool a surface fast.

mac31313,

Thanks for responding. I live in Tampa. I have a few questions. Does your system provide all of your hot water needs? Have you had any freezing problems? Do you run water or glycol through the PEX? What do you think is your pay back period? Can you describe the basic parts of your system?
