Why don't they install geothermal heat pumps in Nevada?

I have recently relocated to the Las Vegas area and I can't find a contractor to do geothermal. Are the wells in this area cost prohibitive?

There's considerable difficulty finding a geothermal HVAC contractor in the Dallas area too.  Most people are told all the reasons why they should instead have conventional HVAC, and/or all of the horrible problems they'll have with GSHP technology HVAC.

Fact of the matter is business is too plentiful here in such a hot climate for there to be good competition for GSHP.  When the AC breaks in the summer, there's no time to research GSHP, try to find a GSHP contractor, and wait the time for a borehold field to be installed along with new equipment that more than likely should have the duct work reworked.  It's just much easier to swap out the conventional unit for another one.

Right now it's Christmas time for HVAC professionals in the Dallas area, with little time to spend educating potential customers on the merits of GSHP while their competitors are quickly sweeping away customers with simply swapping out units.

My guess is major metropolitan areas in Nevada aren't much different.

Amazing as it may be, GSHP HVAC is very much niche market only here in the Dallas area.  Sounds like it may be similar in Nevada.

Best regards,

Bill

Have you checked IGSHPA?

Your comments with respect to just swapping out one conventional AC unit out for another is well taken, however I do know that WaterFurnace International does have a very cost effective method which allows for a home owner to upgrade to a geothermal unit and still receive the benefits of AC on virtually the same day the unit is installed. It is a portable cooling tower which is self contained and is “slaved” to the geothermal unit during the installation process of the unit. The process takes literally a couple of hours and once installed, AC is achieved  as simply as turning on the unit. The tower provides a good period of time for the installer to then schedule and install the loop. It is virtually seamless in the transition from the tower to the loop with the added advantage of providing the homeowner AC during the entire process. There is also the added advantage of potentially qualifying for a 30% tax credit from the Government. This coupled with the savings that the home owner will see in thier cooling bills allows for a very cost effective alternative to conventional AC units.

We have many WaterFurnace dealers in the Dallas area. Please visit our dealer locator at www.waterfurnace.com for a complete list. At the top right corner, click on “Find a Dealer.” Unfortunately, according to our dealer locator, the closest WaterFurnace dealer to the Las Vegas area is Paxman Heating & Cooling in Washington, Utah.

Sgarver is correct. WaterFurnace offers a Cooling Tower, which some contractors use as a temporary loop. The Cooling Tower is designed to provide cooling to the customer the same day the unit is installed. This allows the dealer/installer to schedule and put in the loop at a later date if needed. This accessory is often used in the replacement market from conventional to geothermal. Please keep in mind that the 30% federal tax credit is offered for the qualifying unit, not the cooling tower.

My company (Geotechnical & Environmental Services) installs ground source heat exchange systems in Nevada. We have our own drill rigs and IGSHPA certified installers. Our website is www.gesnevada.com.
